Today, while volunteering at my local dog shelter, I had the opportunity to meet a little dog named Lilly. She is a small white and spotted shepherd mix. She is blind and deaf. I knew I would have the opportunity to visit with this little dog because a friend of mine had posted her picture of Facebook. I was curious to meet her. I have never encountered a dog that is both blind and deaf. I expected her to be shy, withdrawn, or unsocial. I was wrong. She was quite the opposite. She was friendly with other dogs, inquisitive and often wagging her tail. I spent some time with her in her room. Petting her and scratching her belly, wondering what it must be like to live in a world of silent darkness. I found myself morning the loss of her senses and feeling sorry for her position in life. But then I remembered, dogs are not humans. They do not feel sorry for themselves. They do not compare themselves to those more capable or healthy. They accept their place or circumstance in life and go about their day. Dogs can teach us a lot and I think today I learned a lesson from Lilly. I thought why not combine my interests and make treats for my pups. Now I'm in the business of making treats for other people's pups as well. ArchivesMay 2012 |
